DID U KNOW that the iconic Ohrid plane tree, known locally as the “CHINAR TREE,” stands as a symbol of the city, drawing the attention of both locals and numerous visitors? With its rich history and beauty, this majestic tree is not just a natural wonder but has also been declared a rarity by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning.

In the heart of the city square “Krushevska republika,” the centuries-old trunk of this tree often serves as a meeting point for tourists. Legends whisper that this tree, which stands as a testament to over 11 centuries, was planted by Saint Kliment towards the end of the 9th or the beginning of the 10th century. While legends claim it to be over 1100 years old, scientific assessments have determined its age to be around 700 years. This tree has witnessed countless historical events, from public announcements during the Ottoman period to public executions, serving as a grim reminder of the past.

Two years ago, the tree underwent a rehabilitation and revitalization process under the expert guidance of Professor Jane Acevski from the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje. The tree, which had suffered due to age and inadequate protection, is now mechanically supported by four pillars, ensuring its longevity. The surrounding area has also been tastefully arranged to highlight the tree’s grandeur, complete with an irrigation system and appropriate lighting.

Interestingly, the plane tree has always been a popular gathering spot. In the late 19th century, there were cafes around it where people enjoyed coffee, tea, rakija, and wine. This, however, led to some damage to the tree. Today, the tree remains a focal point for residents and tourists, serving as a living testament to Ohrid’s rich history and cultural heritage.

In conclusion, the Ohrid plane tree is a natural marvel and a symbol of endurance, history, and the city’s spirit. Its roots run deep, not just in the soil but in the hearts and stories of the people of Ohrid.
